This unusually large site has a western aspect to a river view with remnants of an old established garden. The clients are a professional couple — he is a sailor and she is a gardener. The design of this house has been influenced by the desire for both a garden pavilion and boat house.
The house is sited in the centre of a corner block. It is generally one-room wide and ‘Z’ shaped in plan to take advantage of the views. Upper-level bedrooms similarly enjoy both prospects. A painted ‘fibro’ box containing bedrooms at the upper level offers protection to lower-level indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Conventional domestic construction is manipulated for an elegant expression, including a folded, floating wall with adjustable vertical louvres for western sun screening.
