The riverfront Hamilton area of Brisbane is rapidly being transformed from its historical role as a warehouse, industrial and working port precinct with a new urban renewal program to establish a premium medium – high density community, leisure and shopping precinct. This prominent site on the key thoroughfare connecting the Brisbane CBD and the airport will be developed for a new 78 room 4.5 star hotel, focussed primarily on the corporate market, but with a design and character that will also importantly appeal to an expanding leisure market.
Our clients, experienced hotel owners and operators, had identified the opportunity some time earlier and provided a very clear and concise brief. We were commissioned to provide both Architectural and all Interior Design services. The proposal includes a high degree of standardisation in the room design to assure an economy of scale and efficient housekeeping. Rooms are generous, and provide a level of sophistication, intimacy and luxury at an international standard, not yet offered elsewhere in the precinct. Almost square in plan, the typical floor is extremely efficient with 4 levels at 20 rooms per floor, and with rooms activating all external facades. The ground floor incorporates a generous porte’-cochere to the main lobby, reception and café/bar. A 6th floor level with spectacular views to the city skyline, accommodates a conference room, kitchen/bar, pool and pool terrace. Car-parking is spread over a basement and the ground floor which also houses all services.
A distinctive contemporary and sub-tropical architecture characterises the building, with a carefully composed and modulated exterior of lightweight, matt, metallic cladding arranged vertically in a 2 storey order, of various colours, alternating with tall windows to all rooms. Windows are shielded with 2 storey high vertical sunshades, and the street façade incorporates a smaller 2 storey porte’-cochere structure, and larger bay windows to some rooms, which give a primacy to the street address. This new hotel will offer a special hospitality experience intended to be uniquely Brisbane.
