Bribie Island, Australia.
Bribie Island is located just off the coast and about an hour north of Brisbane in Queensland. The site for the Malibu Apartments overlooks Woorim Beach and the South Pacific. Designed as holiday apartments, they are planned to maximise views over the beach and the ocean to the North East and provide ideal living conditions in the sub-tropical climate. Good passive solar design ensures that all apartments enjoy excellent natural cross ventilation and an outlook over podium level gardens, including a resort pool. All living areas open on to generous screened outdoor balconies, cars are located in a semi basement carpark and the potential bulky character of the building is strongly articulated by the deep balconies, varying sun-shading devices and the moveable louvred powder-coated aluminium sun screens.
Generally the design is driven by the commercial need for a cost effective construction, and to provide ideal holiday environment apartments to enjoy the views, breezes and aspect. Conceptually, the idea of ensuring a contemporary sub-tropical experience and character has informed decisions about materials, colour and detailing. A predominantly white rendered concrete and block tower, with a palette of pale earthy colours is intended to both exaggerate the play of light and shade, and contrast to the lush greenery of the landscaping to not only the site, but also to the corner street reserves.
