Spring Hill, Australia.
Spring Hill is the oldest of Brisbane’s densely populated and hilly inner city suburbs. The site is located on the western side of a steeply sloping typical Spring Hill residential street. It enjoys views from the south toward the historic Presbyterian Church and the city skyline, and around to the east over Spring Hill toward Fortitude Valley.
Formerly occupied by an older cottage in which the clients had lived for many years, it was their intention to create an enhanced lifestyle, taking better advantage of views and aspect in a more contemporary home. The principal ideas affecting this house formulate a contemporary response to the historical built context and compliance with the stringent Spring Hill development control plan. Elements included a desire to exploit the views and north east aspect with respect to privacy; a preference for larger outdoor living spaces with easy connection to the interiors; enjoyment of a larger garden; and a concern for spaces and form to accommodate a busy lifestyle appropriate to a sub-tropical city house.
The house is built over three levels on a steeply sloping site and incorporates large volume spaces for the living areas, multiple bathrooms, a suspended concrete slab over a semi-basement garage, laundry, and games room, with a moderate level of finish throughout. The house employs conventional construction methods – bagged render concrete block and block veneer walls, concrete and timber floors and steel framed roof.
