Bundaberg, Australia.
Bundaberg Airport Terminal was designed as an important gateway to this subtropical city and region. Despite its small size, it facilitates varying intensities of use and changing operational needs.
It was conceived as a shady place in a flat treeless plain. The sheltering roof which appears to hover above the ground is hung from four masts which also signpost the facilities in the larger landscape.
The city has a proud steel construction and aviation history, being the home of Bert Hinkler, the famous aviator. Formally the steel structure was developed as much from a concern for cost and program as with regard to its scale in landscape, the climate, and compositional proportion.
