The Braddock House is situated on a site which slopes very steeply towards the north eastern views, with road access from below. The development of a formal and sympathetic response to the site conditions and the provision of a rich contemporary lifestyle were the primary issues which affected the work.
The design is intended as a critical response to the particular context of the site and the client’s preference for form and finish. It is concerned with the quality of experience of the site and natural light and the latter effects on the hard edge of the building fabric. The concrete masonry lower level plinth secures the house to the slope while providing shelter to transition zones on decks and entries. The steel and glass upper structure allows a more uninhibited enjoyment of views creating a release and openness to exploit breezes and reflected light.
It is constructed of white concrete block masonry anchoring lighter glass clad steel framed upper levels. These structural systems are manipulated into terraces which step down and across the steep slopes. The terraces are orientated north/south following natural contours and addressing the views and light. Notwithstanding the stated intentions all work has been tempered by a hard budget. Manipulation of standard elements and finished has exerted an influence on resolution of finishes and details.
