The client’s brief for this house requested generous living and entertaining spaces that took maximum advantage of the spectacular forested hillside site.
The principal strategy was to string the primary spaces along a strongly defined north-facing platform and under a gently curving upswept roof. The materials used reinforce the concept of living on a cliff edge under a timber parasol.
The house was built on and around a white concrete block base and walls — the walls ordering the plan and rising up to a consistent level, anchoring the building to the site and defining outdoor spaces. With the exception of the clearing created at the entry, the walls rise directly out of the native bush. The plywood-lined ceiling extends from inside to out, independent of the line of enclosure, and sweeps up to take in the trees and sky. The narrow building section maximises cross ventilation and transparency from entry to the trees beyond.
