The Advanced Engineering Building at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia Campus is based on an integrated architecture approach, one that expresses the spirit of the coming age and the new intellectualism. This approach explores engineering disciplines combined with the digital and virtual world and the need to craft an engaged, collaborative and innovative place.
This is an architecture where the structure and services are inherent, integrated and inseparable from the form, character and expression — the materiality and tectonics — as opposed to an architecture of facades, driven only by a visual interest in complex shapes and patterns.
Four key components underpin this design proposal: an optimised engineered structure; the making of a place of collaboration and community; the embedding of the pedagogical program into the making of place; and the making of an important home for engineering on this part of the St Lucia Campus.
