An adaptive re-use of the middle floor of the heritage-listed Archerfield Airport Control Building, this project converts what was originally utilised as pilot accommodation into a modern, open plan office space that showcases the materiality and character of the original building, while creating a versatile space that reflects the corporate identity of this family business and their future aspirations.
A considered approach to the process of demolition has revealed the layers of workmanship and materials embodied in this building. Sealing and preserving the newly exposed brickwork, concrete floors and timber-formed concrete ceiling, a restrained palette of black painted steel, coloured frameless glass and Tasmanian Oak timber forms the basis of the new insertion into this space. Detailing of steel work, glazing and joinery have all been executed in a manner that highlights the differences between new and old, structure and joinery alike sitting alongside and separate to the “bones” of the original building.
