New resort and lifestyle community proposed for Burnett Heads

19 April 2018

Shane Thompson Architects have recently been commissioned for the design of a major new Central Facilities buildings and associated housing options within a community masterplan proposed for a greenfield site at Burnett Heads 15kms north of Bundaberg, which will shortly be submitted for DA. The proposed new community focused lifestyle development is aimed towards an older demographic who are actively engaged in the use of recreational vehicles and leisure pursuits. The design of the Community Facilities in particular is revolutionary for this building typology.

The key design drivers and planning concepts which informed the new Community Facilities development included; creating a community, visibility of movement and activity, a Queensland place / tropical place, a community of buildings an spaces rather than one large building, a beautiful integration of architecture and landscape, varying experiences of scale from a generous place of arrival and lager gather spaces to small group spaces, a distinct tropical identity combining influence of traditional main streets, Queensland architecture traditions, lush gardens and information arrangements, individual identity and address to each building and function, a place to meet, greet, hangout and socialise, the heart of the community, the informal lagoon and central garden act as the key organising device, a place for all to be proud of, “our place”.
