Rules Beach in the Courier Mail

17 September 2016

"Architect Shane Thompson has turned his love of the coastal lifestyle into a rare opportunity for those who "hanker for those barefoot days" of holidays in traditional beach shacks. The Rules Beach masterplanned project, between Gladstone and Bundaberg, will have 57 beach houses on a 12.2ha site, with 330m of absolute beach frontage. "It's very much based on the coastal communities you find almost anywhere in Australia. There are no fences, single-storey, and they take inspiration from the traditional beach houses of the '50s and '60s. We are using fibre cement for the same reasons it was originally used - it's low cost, which will keep the (overall) cost down, and will fit a variety of colours and different looks," he said. Interiors are simple, with nods to family needs such as two bathrooms and open-plan kitchen, living and dining spaces. Mr Thompson said designs would have a northeast or southeast beach view, and maximise privacy. "Because the homes are designed for holiday letting, there will be on-site management, and if you buy one of the houses, the time you're not there it will become part of the letting pool," he said. "There is no shop at Rules Beach, but there will be a central manager's office with some retail, and you will be able to hire kayaks and stand-up paddle boards as well." Mr Thompson said the loss of beachfront caravan parks and camping grounds was making it harder for the average family to afford a traditional beach holiday. "More often these days they're in a high-rise apartment four blocks back from the beach, they have to negotiate traffic, the ubiquitous coffee shops, retail and carparks, before you set foot on the beach. That won't be the case a Rules Beach. The size will always be limited, it will always be quiet, you will lie in bed at night and listen to the waves breaking. There is no light pollution, so you will look up and see starry skies as you walk along the beach.""
